Formula

How it works

  • Installation (labor and materials) by location: next to the panel $600 · 30–60 ft run $1,100 · detached garage or outdoors $1,800
  • Panel work: none $0 · new 50 A breaker $250 · panel upgrade $2,500
  • Permit: $150
  • Estimated total = installation + panel + permit + charger
  • Range = 0.8 to 1.3 times the total, for regional differences in labor cost

Most of the cost is the electrician, not the charger. A Level 2 charger needs its own dedicated circuit, typically 40–60 A, under the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 625).

Worked example

A worked example

With the charger going in the garage right next to a panel that already has room, the electrician's work runs about $600.00, the panel needs $0.00, and the permit is $150.00. Add a $400.00 charger and the estimated total is $1,150.00, with a likely range of $920.00 – $1,495.00 depending on labor prices where you live.

Questions

FAQ

Do I need a permit for an EV charger?

In most places, yes: a new 240 V circuit usually needs an electrical permit and an inspection. We include $150 for it. Your city or county building department sets the actual fee.

Can my 100 A panel handle a Level 2 charger?

Sometimes. It depends on what else the panel already feeds: an electric range, a dryer, central AC or an electric water heater all add up. An electrician does a load calculation to decide. If it doesn't fit, the calculator's "panel upgrade" option adds $2,500 to the estimate.

Hardwired or plug-in (NEMA 14-50)?

Both need a dedicated 240 V circuit. A plug-in charger goes into a NEMA 14-50 outlet, so you can take it with you; a hardwired unit connects directly and can usually charge at a higher amperage. The installation cost in this estimate is about the same either way.

Why is the range so wide?

Electricians' rates vary a lot between regions, and so does the route the wire takes through your house. The range, 0.8 to 1.3 times the total, is there so the estimate isn't mistaken for a quote.

Is there still a federal tax credit for home chargers?

Not for chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026: the federal 30C credit ended then. Some utilities and states offer their own rebates.
